Joyce, a Fort Lauderdale resident, succinctly captured the sentiment: “We can’t afford the prices right now.” The struggle is palpable; Darvin Somarriba described a daily reality of needing $60 to $70 just to fill his tank, a sum that leaves little room for other necessities – “We work to pay for gas, to get to work, and then we don’t actually have that much amount of money to spend so much money on gas because it’s pretty ridiculous.”
Crude oil drives the spike
AAA spokesperson Mark Jenkins attributes the surge to escalating crude oil prices, now hovering above $100 a barrel. “An increase in oil prices and gasoline futures last week made the jump ‘not a big surprise’,” he explained. Jenkins’ focus is firmly on the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting the potential disruption to global supply chains stemming from ongoing regional conflict – “all eyes really are on the Strait of Hormuz and how this conflict is affecting traffic through that area.”
While some stations, like the RaceTrac off State Road 84, are experiencing localized supply constraints – certain grades temporarily unavailable – the broader region isn’t facing a shortage. Rashed Chowdhury, manager of a 7-Eleven on Las Olas, expressed concern, stating, “If it’s going to happen like this in the future, we are unable to do business.” The strategic stockpiling by some retailers, prioritizing future supply, is contributing to the temporary gaps.
Price variation across the region
Local pricing reveals a fragmented landscape. A station on North State Road 7 in Davie offered $4.02 per gallon for cash payments, while a Dania Beach location priced fuel at $4.19. Consumers are urged to actively shop around – a small difference per gallon can add up considerably.
Practical advice for consumers
Jenkins recommends a multi-pronged approach: “Shopping around at different gas stations for the best price, using reward programs, and driving conservatively.” He added a pointed observation: “Aggressive drivers consume gas much faster, obviously exacerbating the problem.”
