Chicago officer killed, another critically injured in hospital shooting
A Chicago police officer was killed and another remains in critical condition following a shooting inside Swedish Hospital on Monday morning. The incident, which began with an armed robbery at a Family Dollar store, quickly escalated into a deadly confrontation within the hospital’s emergency room.

Officer John Bartholomew, a 10-year veteran of the Albany Park District, was fatally shot while responding to the robbery. A second officer, a 21-year veteran, is fighting for his life. Investigators are still working to determine how the suspect, 26-year-old Aphanso Talley, gained access to a firearm inside the hospital – a critical and perplexing detail.
Talley, already charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder stemming from the initial robbery, was apprehended after a SWAT standoff. Surveillance footage shows two individuals fleeing the scene on scooters shortly after the robbery, setting in motion a chain of events that resulted in unimaginable tragedy.

Authorities have filed a staggering array of charges against Talley, including attempted armed kidnapping, aggravated battery with a weapon, felony escape, armed robbery, and obstruction of justice. He’s also facing charges related to the possession of a fraudulent ID and a firearm as a felon. The sheer volume of accusations reflects the gravity of the crimes committed and the multiple layers of investigation underway.
‘Wherever he had that gun hidden on his body, and all indications is he had it down his back side, that wand would have picked it up,’ stated former Chicago Police First Deputy Supt. Anthony Riccio. ‘The first thing that occurred to me is clearly somebody missed the gun.’
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities focusing on the security breaches that allowed the suspect to access a firearm within a medical facility. This incident underscores the vulnerability of even the most secure environments and raises serious questions about hospital security protocols.
