Police responded to a call around 1:35 a.m. at Harlem Avenue and 71st Street after a red Chevrolet Impala struck Juan Villagomez. The vehicle then fled south on Harlem Avenue before being located in the 8600 block.

Witnesses reported that Villagomez and Claudia Villagomez were crossing Harlem Avenue near The Krash bar when the Impala, traveling in the median lane, struck Juan Villagomez. He was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he later died.

The driver, identified as Abigail Mason of Cicero, initially claimed she had hit an animal. However, police determined she had struck a person. Mason has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash.

Harlem Avenue was closed for several hours as police investigated the scene. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers present on roadways, even in seemingly quiet suburban areas. The speed with which the driver fled suggests a calculated attempt to evade responsibility.

The Villagomez family has not released a statement. The investigation is ongoing.
