Joliet cyclist, 69, seriously injured after being struck by toyota

A 69-year-old man is recovering from serious, non-life-threatening injuries after being struck by a Toyota Camry while riding his bicycle in Joliet, Illinois.

Joliet police responded to the intersection of West Jefferson Street and Springfield Avenue around 12:30 p.m. Saturday for a crash involving a vehicle and a bicyclist.

Preliminary reports indicate the driver, a 45-year-old Joliet woman, was stopped southbound on Springfield Avenue at West Jefferson Street, waiting to turn right onto westbound Jefferson Street when she allegedly initiated a right turn and hit the cyclist.

The bicyclist, identified as an Eastbound rider on the sidewalk along the south side of West Jefferson Street, reportedly entered the roadway to cross Springfield Avenue at the same time the traffic signal for Springfield Avenue was believed to be red.

Police said the impact threw the cyclist from his bicycle, and he was taken to Saint Joseph Medical Center by fire crews with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The Toyota driver was not hurt.

Westbound lanes of West Jefferson Street were temporarily closed during the investigation, which remains ongoing by the Joliet Police Department Traffic Unit. Anyone with video footage or additional information is asked to contact the Traffic Unit at 815-724-3010.
