Southwest airlines toughens lithium charger rules amid safety concerns

Southwest Airlines is cracking down on portable lithium chargers, citing safety concerns. Starting April 20, passengers will be limited to carrying one 100-watt-hour charger per person, down from the current allowance of multiple units. The Dallas-based carrier confirmed the new policy in an internal memo to employees.

Safeguards to be enforced at check-in and onboard

Chargers exceeding the 100Wh limit, including those with higher capacities, will not be permitted on flights. The airline emphasized that passengers may still use portable chargers in-flight, as long as they remain visible. However, recharging devices using in-seat power has been banned.

Additionally, Southwest is restricting where passengers can store their lithium chargers. Instead of overhead bins, the devices must fit under seats or be carried on a person's lap. Checked luggage remains off-limits for portable chargers.

Southwest will notify travelers about the new policy at key points, including pre-trip and check-in, via digital signage, announcements, and one-on-one interactions. The airline cited ongoing safety assessments and evolving regulations as reasons for the stricter rules.
