Mattress store sound baths: a mattress entrepreneur’s unexpected wellness pivot
A mattress store in Atwater Village is hosting sound baths, thanks to a resourceful entrepreneur who traded a studio space for a showroom floor.

An unlikely oasis of calm
The scene is surreal: shoppers browsing plush mattresses, while lying on them, immersed in the resonant tones of chimes and carefully calibrated frequencies. It’s a Sunday night, and Mattress Central is transformed into a temporary sanctuary, courtesy of Alice Moon, a wellness practitioner with a remarkably unconventional approach.
Moon, who previously operated ‘Moon Soul Sound Baths’ from a dedicated studio, recognized the need to adapt after her lease ended. “I thought, how can I go bigger and better with my next space,” she explained. Scrolling through news reports, she stumbled upon a similar event taking place in Utah – a sound bath held, of all places, inside a mattress store. “Brilliant,” she declared, “I gotta take that to LA.”
The partnership with Mattress Central has proven surprisingly fruitful. Owner Krista Youngs reports a noticeable uptick in sales, attributing it, in part, to the calming atmosphere created by Moon’s sessions. “It was oddly calming,” Youngs shared, “to just be around all of these different beds, and all these people.”
Moon’s strategy involves offering up to ten free tickets per event, a deliberate effort to broaden access to the experience. ‘I want to make the experience more accessible,’ she stated. Siri Swanson, a Los Feliz resident, described her session as “a unique experience,” adding, “I wasn’t sleeping, but I wasn’t fully conscious.” Elida Shaffer DeGovia noted, “It wasn’t fully conscious. It was a unique experience.”
Research increasingly supports the benefits of sound frequencies, suggesting they can positively influence both mental and physical well-being. This unorthodox venture highlights a clever solution to the challenges of entrepreneurship and a testament to the growing demand for accessible wellness practices – even if they happen amongst a sea of mattresses.
