Hershey’s unexpected surge: glp-1 drugs fueling snacking boom

Candy giant Hershey is experiencing an unlikely boost in sales, driven by a surprising cohort of consumers: patients taking GLP-1 weight-loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy.

A fishy side effect – and a mint mania

According to Hershey CEO Kirk Tanner, appetite suppressants aren’t just curbing snack portions; they’re simultaneously increasing demand for breath fresheners. ‘We’ve seen strong demand for gum and mint products as the category benefits from functional snacking tailwinds, including GLP-1 adoption,’ Tanner stated during the company’s first-quarter earnings call. Specifically, sales of the Ice Breakers brand jumped 8%.

The connection? Medical professionals are observing a concerning side effect – “Ozempic breath,” a distinctive fishy odor associated with burps and bad breath, linked to the medications’ impact on oral hygiene. While GLP-1 manufacturers haven’t officially listed halitosis as a side effect, Novo Nordisk, the maker of Ozempic and Wegovy, reported that roughly 9% of trial participants experienced ‘eructation’ – or burping – and over 40% reported nausea and vomiting.

These figures don’t just represent anecdotal evidence. Novo Nordisk’s clinical trials highlight a significant portion – nearly 25% – of patients reporting adverse effects related to their oral health while on these medications. It’s a wrinkle in the weight-loss narrative that’s now directly impacting a household name like Hershey’s.

Beyond the breath

Beyond the breath

Dr. Neha Lalani, a medical information provider, cautions that ‘Ozempic breath’ is not a formal clinical diagnosis, but a documented observation. The implications extend beyond unpleasant odors – researchers are actively studying the drugs’ broader effects on patients’ overall oral health. This unanticipated demand for breath mints, ironically fueled by a medication designed to combat weight gain, presents a fascinating, if slightly disconcerting, market dynamic.
