Chicago homicide trial of police officer eric stillman in adam toledo case set to begin next month

The wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Chicago and Officer Eric Stillman over the 2021 killing of 13-year-old Adam Toledo is finally headed to trial. Attorneys for both sides will return to court on Tuesday to hash out the evidence the jury will hear. The case has dragged on for years, with Toledo's mother filing the lawsuit in 2022.

Trial set to begin next month

With the case now assigned to Cook County Law Division Presiding Judge Thomas Lyons after both sides requested a change, the Toledo family's attorney, Adeena Weiss Ortiz, said she expects a lengthy trial with around 90 witnesses over the course of a few weeks. The trial will feature a mix of emotional testimony and forensic evidence.

Adam Toledo's death in a foot chase with Stillman in the Little Village neighborhood sent shockwaves through the city and sparked calls for police reform. Rabbi Michael Ben Yosef, of the Chicago Activist Coalition for Justice, said the family wants justice for Adam and to bring closure to his grieving mother.
