Wrong-way crash claims life, driver pleads guilty to manslaughter

A fatal wrong-turn on Whittier’s Mills Avenue has resulted in a devastating guilty plea, bringing a sliver of justice to the victims and their families. Nicholas Joseph Gutierrez, 25, was found responsible for a 2022 collision that claimed the life of Alejandro Martinez-Inzunza, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department recruit.

The incident, which occurred on November 16th, 2022, involved a group of 76 recruits from LASD’s Class 464 engaged in a routine training run. Gutierrez, driving in the opposite lane, abruptly crossed into the northbound lanes, triggering a catastrophic collision that left ten recruits seriously injured and 25 with various degrees of trauma.

A lengthy investigation and a shifting narrative

Initially, investigators suspected intentionality, prompting a subsequent arrest. However, a protracted investigation – spanning over a year – ultimately revealed a far more mundane, and tragically common, cause: driver fatigue.
