AAA’s data shows the statewide average now sits at $4.02 per gallon, a significant jump from $3.99 last month but a stark contrast to the $4.07 peak experienced early in April. A full tank – 15 gallons – now demands a hefty $60. Patrick De Haan, GasBuddy’s head of petroleum analysis, paints a grim picture, predicting further increases this week, with diesel prices poised to follow suit.

Regional hotspots and looming threats

Metro Detroit is currently paying $4.07, 23 cents higher than last week and 99 cents more than this time last year. But the pain isn't uniform. Marquette’s drivers are currently shelling out $4.09, while Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids are averaging $4.04 and $3.97 respectively. It’s a clear illustration of pricing variations across the state.

De Haan’s warning is that inland states – including those within the Great Lakes and Plains regions – could see their average prices climb to levels not seen since 2022. The situation is particularly acute in Michigan, where these pressures are already intensifying. The volatility is palpable.
