Detroit officials condemn ice chase tactics, demand accountability
Detroit’s city council – Denzel McCampbell, Gabriela Santiago-Romero, and Police Commissioner Victoria Camille – have formally demanded an end to reckless high-speed chases conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) within the city’s residential neighborhoods. The move follows two incidents in May and June that resulted in serious injury and raised profound questions about the department’s operational procedures.
A broken knee, a shattered fence: the human cost of ice’s pursuit
The controversy began on May 19th when an asylum seeker was struck by a vehicle during an ICE pursuit. Witnesses report the driver lost control, sustaining a fractured knee and requiring emergency surgery. More recently, on June 5th, a chase in Detroit’s west side culminated in a catastrophic crash – the driver, hospitalized in critical condition, was impaled by a fence post after the vehicle plowed through a fence and landed on two parked cars.
Unmarked vehicles, flagrant disregard
City officials allege the agents involved were operating in unmarked vehicles, with only one equipped with emergency lights. According to eyewitness accounts, the lack of visibility and the aggressive tactics employed exacerbated the already dangerous situation. ICE officials initially stated the pursuit was a targeted operation to apprehend a suspect attempting to evade arrest, noting an officer sustained a leg injury after being struck by the fleeing vehicle. However, council members are unconvinced, citing a clear violation of established protocols.
Breaking the rules, ignoring safety protocols
Federal law mandates lawful immigration pursuits be conducted in designated vehicles. ICE’s own Emergency Driving Handbook explicitly directs agents to assess the risk-benefit ratio – prioritizing safety over the immediate apprehension of suspects. Yet, according to city officials, this crucial weighing of factors appears to have been entirely absent in both Detroit incidents. A stark contrast to the department’s stated procedures, this oversight has fueled accusations of a dangerous disregard for public safety.
“B.s.” and a demand for reform
“From the available evidence, it’s unequivocally clear that ICE disregarded its own rules, prioritizing a reckless pursuit over the well-being of our community,” stated Councilmember Denzel McCampbell. “Labeling these individuals ‘dangerous’ enough to chase at high speed through parks and neighborhoods is, frankly, ‘B.S.’ We will not tolerate the endangerment of our residents.” Councilmember Gabriela Santiago-Romero echoed this sentiment, highlighting the detention of two non-violent individuals, adding, “These two men have been detained by ICE and the Trump Administration – a shameful display of policy violations and reckless endangerment.”
A call for transparency and accountability
The council's letter to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin lays bare the evidence and demands immediate action: the cessation of high-speed chases and the public release of detailed incident reports.
