Chicago delivery driver dies in reckless hit-and-run

A vibrant young life was cut short Sunday evening in Chicago Lawn when 18-year-old Damien Gomez was fatally struck by a speeding vehicle. The incident, occurring as Gomez delivered food on his bicycle, has ignited a desperate search for the driver responsible and left his family grappling with unimaginable loss.

The collision and immediate aftermath

According to Chicago Police, Gomez was riding his bicycle in the 6300 block of South Kedzie Avenue when a red sport utility vehicle ran a red light, colliding with him. The impact proved fatal; Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the SUV sustained critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

Authorities initially released a stock photograph of a 2015 Ford Explorer, believed to be the vehicle involved, hoping the generic image would spur recognition. But the lack of specificity has frustrated investigators and fueled public outcry. The incident underscores a troubling pattern of reckless driving plaguing Chicago streets, particularly in densely populated areas like Chicago Lawn.
