US Stocks Surge to Records as Profits Soar and Oil Prices Ease
The US stock market experienced a significant rally on Tuesday, reaching record highs as companies continued to report robust profits and oil prices saw a notable decline. The S&P 500 jumped 1.8%, surpassing its previous all-time peak set a couple of months prior.
Key Market Movers
The Dow Jones industrial average added 907 points, or 1.7%, to a new record, while the Nasdaq composite climbed 2.6%. Palantir Technologies led the charge, surging 29.5% following CEO Alex Karp’s announcement of a 93% revenue leap – describing the quarter as “otherworldly.” Caterpillar also saw strong gains, climbing 5.6% after reporting record quarterly sales and revenue exceeding $20 billion for the first time, driven by strong order rates and a growing backlog.

Profit Expectations and Industry Trends
Looking ahead, companies within the S&P 500 were projected to deliver nearly 50% growth in earnings per share for the spring compared to the previous year, according to FactSet – the largest increase since 2021. This positive outlook, coupled with stock prices remaining relatively stable over the past two months, suggests that the market isn’t as overvalued as it was previously. Additionally, the AI boom is fueling demand for turbines powering data centers, benefiting companies like Caterpillar.

Oil Prices and Chip Stocks
Brent crude prices fell 5.3% to $79.36 per barrel, reflecting a shift from fear to optimism in the oil market, following uncertainty surrounding the conflict with Iran. Computer chip companies also contributed to the market’s strength, with Nvidia, Broadcom, and Micron Technology posting gains of 2.6%, 6.6%, and 7.6% respectively. However, Chipotle Mexican Grill experienced a 9.7% drop due to concerns about potential future profit declines following a salmonella outbreak.

Market Performance
The S&P 500 closed at 7,736.52, an increase of 136.02 points. The Dow Jones industrial average finished at 54,085.88, up 907.47 points. The Nasdaq composite reached 26,584.99, gaining 671.10 points.
