Pittsburgh Homicides Exceed Last Year's Numbers, Though Remain Lower Than 2022

Pittsburgh and Allegheny County are experiencing a rise in homicides compared to last year, with four people killed in shootings this week alone. The incidents occurred in Penn Hills, Homewood, and Bedford Dwellings.

County and City Statistics

According to KDKA-TV, there have been 50 homicides in Allegheny County this year, encompassing both the city and surrounding areas. Last year, the county recorded 66 homicides. Within the city, 25 homicides have occurred this year, up from 20 at this time last year.

Recent Shootings and Police Response

Two fatal shootings occurred overnight in Pittsburgh, one in Bedford Dwellings and another in Homewood. Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesperson Cara Cruz stated that there is no indication the shootings are connected, attributing them to a “violent overnight.” Police are implementing directed patrols in the affected areas.

Comparison to Previous Years and Police Investigation

While homicide numbers are up from last year, they remain lower than the spike seen in 2022. This year's data represents the second-lowest homicide rate since 2018. Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Chief Jason Lando condemned the violence, stating that it is unacceptable. Detectives are investigating three homicides that occurred between Tuesday and Wednesday, which appear to be isolated incidents with no ongoing threat to the public. Police are reviewing camera footage and conducting investigations at the crime scenes.

Community Violence Prevention Efforts

The Allegheny County Department of Human Services has invested over $50 million over five years in community violence prevention programs. The department noted that despite the increase compared to last year, the current homicide rate is significantly lower than rates from 2008-2024. They plan to continue investing in these prevention efforts.
